"The photographs presented here are part of a larger body of work using a printing technique I call 'ink-on-paper.' It refers to making unique works by applying multiple layers of ink on a rag paper using an Epson inkjet printer. I found the process by chance searching for ways to exploit the capabilities of inkjet printing.

The original images are photographs of the urban space, taken between 2016-2019, of street graffiti, wall markings and found objects. I deconstructed the original photographic images, looking for tonal variations in the blacks, grays and highlights. The resulting prints comprise a layering of tonalities and depths. For me, this process bridges the gap between photography and hand- made works-on-paper, (e.g. charcoal or oil) and it allows me to re-examine the meaning of abstraction in contemporary photography.” — Michael J.
