Marking time, Chris McCaw

Chris McCaw works with a manually modified large format camera, loading vintage photo paper in place of film, and letting the sun come through the lens to physically burn the paper. This analog photographic method holds the unique documentary aspects of photography, as it captures the day and night of a distinct time and place. The passage of time is also recorded on the vintage paper, marked through varying levels of sunlight throughout the day. This book is a compilation of McCaw’s diverse work from the past 20 years, featuring the significant “Sunburn” series along with his “Heliograph,” “Poly-Optic,” “Cirkut,” and “Tidal” series, allowing us to experience the full scope of his variations flowing as one body centered around the sun.

This Too Shall Pass, Morvarid K

To see the static, silent, empty, overwhelmingly lifeless landscape and to confront what remains after the wild bushfires. This Too Shall Pass begins in Australia in 2020 and continues in France in 2021 and 2022, with the fires affecting both countries.
This project questions the complexity of human perception, the adjustment mechanism that allows us to tame the brutal, the destructive. How we set up a process to make the Thanatos bearable. Not forgetting our strength to seek beauty in the absolute darkness.

This Too Shall Pass is divided into three parts.

After the denial of the first encounter with the burnt landscape and the stupefaction it provokes; comes the realisation - collecting the material, the charred trace of the trees on the photographic prints; and finally, trivialisation and oblivion, a fragmentation and abstraction of the matter in the minds without having solved the problem of wildfires.

Since the 1950s, Valentino Garavani has been creating red garments that embody the vitality of a new world, renewing elegance and clarity. His use of red became a distinctive style—both personal and cultural, capturing the spirit of an era and giving it form. This exhibition, marking the launch of the Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti Foundation in Rome, explores the phenomenology of red in painting alongside Valentino’s own reds. Over time, his unique hue has transcended fashion to become universally recognized as "Valentino Red." Works by artists such as Andy Warhol, Mark Rothko, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, dedicated to or deeply connected with this red will also be on display.

Hideyuki Ishibashi, Ombre (影 Kagé), 2025

Hideyuki Ishibashi’s approach combines ancient techniques and contemporary tools to reconstruct images at the boundary between the tangible and the imaginary.

Going back to his Japanese origins, Hideyuki focuses on the tragic Japanese event in 1944. Due to the scarcity of weapons, the Fujihira Togei pottery company gave the duty to schoolgirls and artisans to produce ceramic grenades for the Japanese army, during the war against the Americans. The government then buried these grenades in shame of the violent utility of Japanese ceramic traditions.
Hideyuki therefore went back to rediscover these buried grenades and reinvented new ones on the same basis, in collaboration with the same old pottery company. However, this time not as a weapon used for war, but as a beautiful single-flower vase, symbol of peace.

The ceramic grenades can contain water.

No American roadtrip is so classic as the one bound west, especially from New York to California. That is the route Italy-born photographer Renato D’Agostin took in summer 2015 on his 1983 BMW R100, cruising 7,439 miles coast-to-coast: breaking down, developing film in motel sinks along the way.
“It was challenge,” says D’Agostin, “because the cross-country roadtrip has been done so much; it’s a part of your American photographic culture. Robert Frank did it sixty years ago, leaving a strong mark on everybody’s mind, and many other adventures followed. The size, distance, and scale in the landscape is something I’ve never seen before. Everything changes; it is hard to believe it’s the same country from north to south, east to west. It keeps surprising you.”
But he found patterns. The headlamp on his bike mimicked the full moon above. The roads, rivers, and rocket launch contrails -even the Coca-Cola cursive- appeared like ribbon. What you see in this series are hints of a larger picture.
He says, “Everything doesn’t have to be photographed in the same way to be remembered.”

Using traditional processes (Polaroid, enlarger printing, bichromate gum, collodion), Thomas Paquet keeps an artisanal approach to photography. He works with matter, takes his time and challenges the speed at which our contemporary societies evolve on a daily basis. Thomas Paquet’s work is not exclusively aiming at fixing a portion of space but focuses on the duration itself.

Babylone, Thierry Urbain

Ulysses was thinking about everything his mother had told him: about the bodies over there, resting in their tombs, lying on their sides, legs folded, one hand beneath the cheek, the other stretched along the body — a very large body with a deformed skull, painted in ochre. At the crossroads of the souls of the North and of Sumer, asleep in the wind, the corpses waited to begin again, for the gods to give them a sign.

Kapadokya, Renato D'Agostin

Kapadokya, Renato D'Agostin

Kapadokya belongs solely to the myth.

It was once inhabited, in the middle of traffic plying the ancient Anatolia by connecting the logic west with the east of religion, the magic and the wonderful.

For this reason Pasolini set his Medea, as if Euripides took from those caves of mystery the golden fleece to carry to Greece.

Now nothing has remained besides the wonderful, the timeless, the silence/suspended wing over the unchangeable cobalt, the shadow/mystery of painted caves. Which people will again animate those stones? Maybe nobody. Which word will rise from underground to become harmony again? What form will clouds be in the sky? Or will it forever remain the stone and the enigma of gone seasons, of extinct spirits?

There will remain nothing but the mystery-blue sky, the moon in silvery nights, the motionless sun over lonely rocks. Forever, because the only one not to die is the myth.

Macadam 1963, Bernar Venet
€22.00

Macadam 1963, Bernar Venet

From 1961 to 1963, Bernar Venet produced a number of works based on a “principle of equivalence” that enabled him to convey the same content through different media, with the color black as a common thread, this black embodying the refusal of easy communication while praising a form of austerity in opposition to the emerging figuration and dazzling lyrical abstraction of the 1960s. This decade was marked by a radical approach based on constant experimentation, leading to new typologies of sculptural, pictorial, sound and photographic works characterized by neutrality, serial production and the rejection of composition.

For Bernar Venet, photography is indeed necessarily conceptual and experimental. It was photography that enabled him to make his very first artwork (Performance dans les détritus) in 1961. In 1963, he created a photographic series, Macadam Noir, based on close-ups of tarred ground. Conceived as a continuation of his early black monochrome paintings and his Tars, this series is part of this extremely prolific context, and breaks with the use of photography hitherto employed as a means of documenting or bearing witness to an event.

Moods in a Room, Catherine Balet
€45.00

Moods in a Room, Catherine Balet

Playing with transparencies and surrealist collages, Catherine Balet's new series “Moods in a Room” plays with virtual reality by mixing pictorial textures and digital photographic elements. She superimposes them in multiple layers, giving a material feel to the unreal and a virtuality to her material images! The resulting compositions reveal the various states of consciousness of the artist, and illustrate her commitment to endlessly explore the dualities between content and absence, space and surface.

The technique the artist adopted, using layers of images, allows her to create photographs that play on many levels and whose transparency shapes the depth of the pictorial space. The underside (made with a digitized version of her own paintings) exists as much as the top layer and reveals a matter usually unknown in photography. The mat colored surfaces blend with the brighter areas of the photograph. Besides, the images in the series reveal, through the superimposition of layers of different architectures, a fantasy urban space where cold and warmth coexist. A fictitious setting where strange and familiar stories are played, animated by more or less ghostly characters.

This is not a map, California, François Fontaine

This is not a map, California, François Fontaine

Although Bernard Plossu’s photographs have been assembled into countless books, this is the first time they have come together as a map! And yet there’s nothing more familiar to this insatiable traveler - aside from his legendary Nikkormat - than a roadmap. Taken over the course of several trips to the Portuguese capital - “we’re not specifying the dates because it’s far more poetic” according to BP - the 33 photographs combine to create an intimate, moving vision of this city he loves so dearly.

A commentary written by his good friend Alain Bergala accompanies the images.

Sea, sex and sun.

Matière noire, Martin Désilets

Matière noire, Martin Désilets

Specters of Art
> In 2017, Martin Désilets began Matière noire, a procedural work that unfolds in an extended temporality, a lifetime in fact. Matière noire [Dark Matter] consists of photographing all modern and contemporary visual works found in museums, and superimposing them in a single digital file until complete black is obtained. In the surfeit of images, which provokes what many call an “attention crisis,” the artist offers us paradoxical works, at once ethereal and dense, which require a slowing down of the gaze.
> The book Matière noire [Dark Matter] presents the first 100 states of the series of the same title, andAll the Disasters of War, another important work in the artist's career, created by superimposing the eighty engravings from Francisco de Goya's series The Disasters of War. Three critical essays by authors Catherine Nichols, Michel Poivert, and Pauline Martin complete this work published by the Berlin-based publishing house Distanz.
> Let us return to Matière noire [Dark Matter] and its process. And perhaps, especially, to the astrophysical metaphor contained in its title: “black matter,” or “dark matter,” resonates with the renowned “black holes” in the collective imagination. […] There is a little of this in Matière noire, when we bring the discussion to the level of art history. The superimposition of countless works of art, like so many stars whose light can no longer reach us, forms a kind of sensitive plate that would stand as art’s negative. Is this not the methodic darkening of pictorial matter, opacifying the camera screen, and then the print produced from the concatenation? If everything is fuzzy, blurred, and opacified, sometimes to the point of blackness, this invisibility is paradoxically quite visible. It is a mass of presences, but showing only the succession of transparencies from which the material must be substracted. There is indeed something from beyond, and if not from the outer limits recorded through the astronomer’s lens, what else could it be but the phantoms of art? - Michel Poivert
