Le voyage et la mémoire au XIXe siècle, Sarga Moussa & Sylvain Venayre

This book brings together studies by specialists in travel literature and historians, focusing on the 19th century. The links between travel and memory are as old as history and literature, but they are far from always being of the same nature.
One of the distinctive features of travel writing is its constant tension between here and there, between detachment from oneself (without which there would be no adventure) and a form of return (without which there would be no narrative).

Here, the focus is on the practices and representations of travel, independently of the question of destinations or the social category of travelers, which too often underlies the study of travel narratives. Beyond all the ruptures that define it (revolutions, explorations, colonizations, industrialization), this century constitutes a homogeneous sequence in the history of travel. The practices and representations of travel by men and women of the nineteenth century are discussed, based on their different conceptions of memory.
