And then at the end of the afternoon thinking: I’ve captured so many moments far from the waves, I can probably allow myself a few, just like that, to finish the day. Going and hanging out on the planches. Like everyone else.
A few weeks later, when looking at the images, realising that these rare pictures, the ones from the end of the afternoon, were always better than the other ones. That all these days far from the sea were leading me to it. So not fighting it anymore. Not wanting to be cleverer anymore. Looking at the beach. Looking at the sea. In Deauville.

“Je m’étais promis ça. Pas la plage. Pas comme tout le monde.
Pas se faire aimanter. Se croire plus malin et vouloir photographier
un « autre Deauville ». Et puis en fin d’après-midi penser : j’ai fait tant d’images loin des vagues, je peux m’en autoriser quelques-unes. Aller traîner sur les planches. Comme tout le monde.
Quelques semaines plus tard, au moment de réunir les images,
s’apercevoir que ces rares photographies-là, celles des fins d’après-midi, l’emportaient chaque fois sur les autres. Que toutes ces journées loin de la mer n’avaient fait que me mener à elle. Alors ne plus lutter. Ne plus vouloir être plus malin. Regarder la plage. Regarder la mer. À Deauville.
